Job Description

We are a family in Long Island City seeking a warm, experienced, reliable part-time Evening Mother's Helper/Nanny to help our family during the busy after-school, dinner, and bedtime hours. We have an energetic 3-year-old boy and a newborn. We are looking for someone who genuinely enjoys young children, is comfortable with both preschoolers and infants, and can become a dependable extra set of hands during the evening routine. This is more than a traditional babysitting position. We are looking for someone who can independently engage with the children while also helping keep the household running smoothly during the evening. At least one parent will almost always be home for much of the shift, although the candidate should be fully capable of independently caring for either child. Schedule Approximately 15 guaranteed hours per week, primarily weekday evenings. Anticipated schedule is approximately 3 hours per evening, Monday through Friday, with some flexibility on exact start/end times. Typical hours may be approximately 5:00–8:00 PM or similar. Occasional additional evening/date-night hours may be available by mutual agreement. Primary Responsibilities The position will primarily focus on helping us manage the after-school through bedtime period. Responsibilities may shift from evening to evening depending on which child needs attention but 1 parent will be with 1 child while the caregiver is with the other. Childcare responsibilities include:

• Actively engaging and playing with our 3-year-old
• Helping with his dinner
• Bath, pajamas, books, and bedtime preparation
• Providing age-appropriate play and activities
• Helping manage normal toddler/preschool behavior, including tantrums and transitions
• Caring for our newborn as needed, including bottle feeding, burping, diapering, soothing, and holding the baby
• Allowing a parent to spend individual time with one child while you care for the other
• Possible pickup of infant from daycare (5-7 minute walk)
• Taking 3 year old to the playground, on walks, or other nearby activities when appropriate
• Eventually being comfortable caring for both children independently for reasonable periods of time

Mother's Helper Responsibilities During natural downtime or while a parent is caring for one of the children, we would like assistance with light household tasks related to keeping the evening running smoothly, including:

• Washing and preparing bottles
• Loading/unloading the dishwasher
• Cleaning up after children’s meals
• Children’s laundry, folding, and putting clothes away
• Tidying toys and children’s spaces
• Preparing children’s belongings for school/daycare the following day
• Light meal preparation or helping prepare children’s meals
• Keeping children’s supplies organized
• Helping reset the kitchen and common areas after the evening routine

This is not a housekeeping position. We are looking for someone who naturally sees what needs to be done and is comfortable pitching in rather than waiting to be given a task every few minutes. Ideal Candidate Our ideal candidate is calm, affectionate, energetic, and highly dependable. We particularly value initiative and judgment. The right person should be comfortable walking into a busy household where a baby may be crying, a 3-year-old may need dinner or a bath, and a parent may be occupied with the other child—and be able to figure out how to be helpful. Qualifications Candidates should ideally have:

• Significant experience caring for children ages newborn through preschool
• Particular comfort with active 2–4-year-old children
• Infant-care experience
• At least two strong childcare references from families or employers
• Ability to independently manage dinner, bath, play, and bedtime routine for one of the children
• Comfort with bottle feeding, diapering, soothing, and basic newborn care
• Strong reliability and punctuality
• A proactive attitude and willingness to help with child-related household tasks
• Good communication skills
• Non-smoking

Fluency in English is not required, but the candidate should have sufficient English proficiency to communicate comfortably with our family, interact with our children, understand instructions, and handle an emergency. Compensation Approximately $25–$30/hour, depending on experience and qualifications, with approximately 15 guaranteed hours per week. We are willing to pay toward the higher end of the range for an exceptional candidate with substantial infant and preschool experience who can operate independently as a true family assistant.
